[music |Judas Priest - HellRider (What else?)]

WoW! a community after my own heart! heheh... I won't bother restating all of my recent incidents... The following is from my Jan 31, '06 entry...

"The ride home was great 'cept for the jerk that almost ran me over (not far from work). He lane-changed into the bike lane (to get around traffic, the bastard) and he did not pay particular attention to the fact that there may have been someone already THERE! I dodged and then I chased the prick down. He pulled into a gas station not far ahead. I did my usual road-rage thing at him (well, chasing him down was road rage too) and yelled at 'im..."That was a fucking goddam bike lane and don't you fucking know how to fucking LOOK before you fucking change lanes, you goddam asshole!" ... or something like that.

He was very appologetic and claimed "I saw you and I thought I was a little ahead of you" Ummmm.. I told him "bullshit, I've heard that before." ...and his ass did not BELONG in the bike lane in the first place.

gads.....

The rest of the ride was calming tho. Once I was off the street and on the trail, I cranked the music up and started grinding all the way home."

i have noticed that since this last summer my required alertness has been constant. Having to step back or run to avoid being hit by a vehicle was a 4-5 times a week event last spring. Just something that would jolt my heart for a couple minutes. Lately this happens everytime (EVVVVVERYTIME!) i cross an intersection. Or as per last week when i was on the side walk and there was a car turning right. While he was watching for the traffic he was merging into he drove right up onto the sidewalk and didn't notice me running up onto the grass to avoid being shinned by his bumper!

i really try to care for other people, i make conscious decisions not to cast judgements and negate someones character with comments (that will not make a difference if spoken). but it is SO HARD to find compassion when so many people have absolutely no consideration for your physical care. it's challenging fighting violent urges to pull someone from their car and then to try to talk reason into them. how do we do it? how do we tell drivers that we shouldn't have to worry about our physical safety every moment we are not enclosed by walls!? and as if writing a letter to the editor or any local newspaper will do shitall.

I AM SO FRUSTRATED.

Apparently roads didn't exist before the automobile... [Oct. 16th, 2005|04:16 pm]

There is a automobile versus bicycle war just getting started on the Atlanta community. The original poster asked some reasonable questions but you can see Atlanta's typical car first religion in the comments section:

Anyone want to correct this person's anti-cyclist attitude? She seems to think roads are for cars but it's ok for bikes... as long as they admit they're second class citizens and keep to the edge of the road out of her way.

road rage, or have you ever...? [Aug. 27th, 2005|12:23 am]

I'm cruising downhill on Beechfield the other day on my way to work, and I see that the light to Wilkens is actually green. It's sensor-activated, so it's usually never green. I see a left-turner on the other side waiting, so I signal and set up for my left turn (at about 15mph) and start leaning. After I've already committed to my turn, a pickup truck slips around the left-turner and charges through the intersection right into my path. I have to back out of the turn and panic brake. I think I lifted the back wheel a bit. I yell a 'Fuck You!' to the truck as he roars by, since I'm stuck in the middle of a busy intersection in high gear. And once one motorist blazes a trail, more follow, even after the light turns orange.
I get the strongest urge to pick up my bike and throw it at one of the assholes running the orange. I already ordered my next bike, so it'd be but a few days' inconvience. Is this a familiar experience for y'all?

riding to home depot in somerville... going straight on the right side of a wide one-way, a woman on her cell with four kids in the car drove up very fast around my left and turned right in front of me without looking or signalling or having any consideration.  i had to slide and swerve with her... rode about three blocks with her untill she had a stop.. told her she caused me to slide and swerve.. she apologized and had no idea i was even there.... wtf!  it was bright out.  there were no obstructions... i was in plain view... how can that be except for a gross lack of awareness.

a friend of mine was hit by a car while biking on willow street earlier today (~9:15AM). the driver did not stop. she said that several people helped her out (one of whom apparently got the license plate number!), but, after being scared out of her mind, she forgot to get their contact information. and witnesses are good when you're trying to nail some asshole for a hit-and-run. so if you happened to see this, or know someone who did, please contact me and i'll send the information on to her: androidqueen AT gmail DOT com. thanks!

Using Google Alerts to Watch Bike/Car Accidents [May. 1st, 2005|02:56 pm]

Hi all,

This is my first post here on LJ. I wanted to write *somewhere* that I've been monitoring Google News via their "Alerts" with keywords "bicycle hit car" (order isn't important, so this yields up bikes hitting cars and vice-versa, as well as some unrelated topics), and the results are pretty alarming. My mailbox is now full of accident notices about little kids and experienced bike commuters alike. I'm not sure I have the optimal keywords, but I wanted to let other people know about this so you can try it too. It definitely reminds me to be alert, stop at all the red lights and stop signs, wear a helmet, sport blinkers, and yes, punch cars when they flout the rules!

Safe riding!

P.S. Has anybody had any success in reporting drivers for dangerous behavior? It is comforting that they all have license numbers...

[mood |my housemate playing Marley on]

just coming into harvard square on mass - in the bike lane - when an asshole driving a new mercedes comes around from my right and dives into the bike lane right in front of me and quickly stops to double park. i had to slide both tires all the way until i skidded up to his left window. looking back, i should've just plowed into him. anyway, when i said, "that was really fuckin dangerous", he just rolled his eyes and started to pull away, so i tapped his hood a few times with my ring to get his attention. he told me off but then rescinded when i suggested that we involve the police. ass.

old white man in a new BMW [Mar. 19th, 2005|07:39 pm]

[music |Le Tigre - Deceptakon]

my girlfriend and her housemate mike and i are out showing mike around on his first day biking in Boston. while coming to central square on Columbia St., a bmw driver speeds up behind us, honks and then dangerously swerves around us forcing up over to the side.. only to have to immediately come to a quick stop at a stoplight. i rode up behind him and tapped his bumper (ya, trying to provoke him). he stepped out angry as hell and about to start in on me. i said i had his plate and that i would call the cops. he said, "She (my gf) was in the road and I honked and went around." ::eye rolling:: so after making a few personal threats and being held back by the woman in the passenger's seat from pursuing those threats, the angry old white man in his fancy penis car drove off to have a miserable night stewing in his rage.

::high five::
